I’ve been fortunate to follow Marcquiese for a while. He is a subway Bboy as well as an acrobatic dance teacher. He dances with a crew that often includes children he mentors. The performances are fast-paced, since they occur between stops; at the end they jump out and run to the next subway car. This series of photos is greatly influenced by Bruce Davidson’s book, Subway. His high-contrast photos depict the subway when it was covered in graffiti and textures. While the subway is cleaner now, watching today’s Bboys and listening to their music brings me to the time when Davidson created those photos, when the hip hop culture was being born.
